Bangkok now operates two airports, namely the newish Suvarnabhumi Airport 30 kms east of downtown and the Don Muang Airport 20 kms north of downtown.
To get from Suvarnabhumi Airport to downtown:
1. Airport express buses
The air-conditioned Airport Express operates 4 bus routes to downtown, namely AE1 to Silom, AE2 to Khao San Road, AE3 to Sukhumvit and Wireless Road, and AE4 to Hua Lamphong, each taking about 60-90 minutes, charging a flat 150 baht and operating hourly from 5:00am to midnight.
Pick up area is by the inner curb at the Arrivals level on the 2nd floor. Contact at Airport Bus Counter Level 1, near Entrance 8.
2. Public buses
Take a free airport shuttle bus (Express route) to the Bus Terminal at the Transport Center and catch one of the many 24 hour public buses to Minburi (no. 549), Happy Land (no. 550), Victory Monument (no. 551), On Nut BTS station (no. 552), and Samut Prakan (no. 553) for a flat 35 baht.
It will take about 1 hour to 2 hours depending on the traffic, a cheap if somewhat slow and crowded way.
Public bus service is provided from the bus terminal at the airport?s Transport Center (which can be reached by taking a free airport shuttle bus). Public buses depart frequently to Bangkok and the surrounding area. Buses go and Don Muang Airport (no. 554
24 hour public bus service is provided from the Bus Terminal at the Transport Center. Take a shuttle bus (Express route) to the Transport Center
Bus fare is 35 baht.
3. Taxis
Metered taxis can be found outside the exit on the 1st floor. Or take a free airport shuttle bus to the Transport Center taxi stand and wait in lines to be picked up.
Metered taxi fare, plus a 50 baht airport surcharge, about 60 baht highway tolls would add up to 300-400 baht depending on your destination downtown. Allow 40-60 minutes, depending on traffic.
Additionally, Limousine taxis are available reserved at the limousine Service Counter on the 2nd floor just outside Arrivals. The limousine service picks up on the Arrivals level by the outer curb and costs about 600-1500 baht.
4. Car rental
To get a rental car contact Car Rental Service Counter at the Arrivals level (2nd floor) and take a free airport Shuttle Bus (Express Route) to the Car Rental Center at the Public Transport Center to pick your rental car
Service providers: AVIS (+66 2255 5300), Hertz (+66 2722 6161), Central (+66 2251 2778), and Budget (+66 2203 0250).
5. Train
There is currently no direct rail links from Suvarnabhumi to central Bangkok. A high-speed "Suvarnabhumi Airport Link" rail system connecting Suvarnabhumi and Makkasan in central Bangkok is under construction, and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2007 or the early 2008.
To get from Don Muang Airport to downtown:
1. Taxis
Public Taxi Stand can be found on the sidewalk in front of the Arrival Halls International & Domestic Passenger Terminals. Count on metered 200-250 baht fare plus a 50 baht airport surcharge and a 30-70 baht expressway toll charge.
Or from the desks in the terminals can you book a limousine taxi for the same 35-90 minutes trip at about twice the price.
2. Train
Bangkok Airport Express trains run every 90 minutes from 8:00am to 7:00pm for a flat 100 baht.
Regular trains operate from 5:30am to 9:00pm, and charge 5 baht for a local train, and 13 baht for an express.
Train station is across a covered overpass from the airport.
It is obviously the cheapest way to get from Don Muang to central Bangkok, but not very safe late at night and not very convenient, since the train terminus is located in Chinatown, not the hotel strips.
3. Bus
A bus service costing 100 baht runs about every 30 minutes between Don Muang and four sectors of central Bangkok, including Silom Road business district (A1), Sanam Luang, Chinatown and Siam Square in Banglamphu areas (A2), Phrakanong district (A3), and Hua Lamphong (A4).
The bus stop is outside the arrivals hall.
You can also stop an air-conditioned local public bus costing 25 baht on the main road bypassing the airport. For example, Bus 4 goes and many ritzy hotels and down to Silom Road, Bus 29 goes to the Northern Bus Terminal, Victory Monument, Siam Square, and Hualamphong station, Bus 504 goes to the World Trade Center.

There're more ways to get around Bangkok than you can think of. Buses and taxis take you everywhere in town, while the Skytrain (BTS) and Bangkok Metro stop at every corner in the city centre. Express boats, river taxis and tail-boats ply up and down the Chao Phraya River, while motorbikes and Tuk-tuks are on the prowl for short journeys during rush hours.
Taxis are the most popular way of getting around Bangkok. It is comfortable and efficient, since all taxis in Bangkok are now metered and air-conditioned.
There's such a good supply of taxis that you can wave one down anywhere at the side of the road day or night. Taxi Ranks can be found outside shopping complexes and subway stations.
Those with a red light sign on the front window are available. The hailing fee is 35 baht for the first 2 km and around 5 baht for each km thereafter and most trips can be completed for well under 100 baht even if you have been jammed in the traffic for ages.
Just make sure the taxi you're taking has a meter and that it starts from 35 baht. Or you can negotiate upon fares before getting in if you agree not to use the meter.
You would be occasionally turned down if the driver is not going your way, especially late in his shift, or if he has no idea about the location of your destination. Although most drivers can recognize the names of tourist attractions and major hotels, a city map would help a lot.
Passengers coming from both airports are responsible for a 50 baht airport surcharge and an optional 30-70 baht Tollway fees should you use espressway.
Other popular forms of transportation in Bangkok include:
1. BTS Skytrains
An elevated rail system which crosses the city with 2 routes: the Mo Chit - On Nut route and the National Stadium-Taksin Bridge route and connects many of the hottest spots along Sukhumvit and Silom Roads.
The BTS Skytrain operates from 6:00am to midnight and departures every 5 minutes, obviously the ideal means of transportation to escape Bangkok?s insane traffic and notorious pollution.
Tips: Prepare 5 or 10 baht coins to purchase tickets from vending machines at every station. Fares range from 15-40 baht per person depending on distance traveled.
Purchase a stored-value card (from 100 baht), a "ride all you like" tourist pass (from 100 baht/day) or a multiple ride pass, if you?re staying in town for quite a while.
2. Tuk-tuks
Three-wheeled 'open-air' samlor taxis; Popular for short jaunts for less than 3-4 passengers in town; Known for the capability to maneuver into the tightest spots in the traffic; Drivers usually hang out near tourist spots and call out to you.
Minimum fares, for journeys of up to 3 kms, are approximately 30 Baht. Cheaper than metered taxis.
Note: Tuk-tuks have no meter, fares must be bargained in advance. All open-air, you'll inhale much polluted air and get very dirty at the end of the trip.
3. Bangkok Subway
Opened in July 2004; A single subway line departs from the Hualompong station under Rama IV road, Asoke/Ratchadapisek Road, Ladprao and Kampangphet roads and terminates at Bang Sue station, linking Chatuchak Weekend Market, Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, several hotels, shopping centers and business districts.
Trains leave every five minutes in peak times (7:00-09:00am, 4:00-7:00pm) and every seven minutes at off-peak times; Single ride costs about 15-39 baht depending on distance traveled; Pre-paid cards of up to 1000 baht available.
Tips: You can change for the Skytrain at Silom Road (Skytrain Saladaeng) station, Sukhumvit (Skytrain Asoke) station and Chatuchak (Skytrain Mo Chit) station.
4. Buses
City Buses come in abundance, go everywhere and cost just pennies; Minimum fare of 3.50/5 baht to most destinations; Air-conditioned buses charge 6-18 baht, depending on the distance traveled; Air-conditioned microbuses charge a flat fare of 20 baht all routes.
Note: There are air-conditioned buses sharing some of the same numbers as buses withoout air conditioning, but do not go into the same routes.
If you can not speak Thai, it can be an adventurous trip.
Not the favorite means of transportation, you may encounter pickpockets, insane crowds and terrible traffic, obnoxious drivers, or aggressive conductors.
Tips: Keep the ticket for inspections; Keep an eye on your belongings.
5. Boat
Some boats ferry passengers across the river for as little as 2 baht, while others cruise the water to various piers and landing stages for 5-20 baht, depending on distance.
For set routes, try Chao Praya River Express, the cheapest and most popular aquatic transport option. You can get to most tourist sites along the river for well under 10 baht. The Canal boats charge 8-20 baht.
You can hire a long-tail river taxi for trips outside the set routes. They are fairly expensive, sometimes as much as 500 baht per hour.
A cheap yet great way to experience quintessential Bangkok, immune immune to Bangkok's notorious traffic jams
6. Motorcycle Taxi
Faster means of transportation during traffic jams; Slightly expensive than metered taxis; Drivers clad in fluorescent yellow-orange vests and call out for passengers at street corners and near shopping malls.
Note: Inherently dangerous, should generally be avoided except as a last resort when traffic crawls and there?re no mass-transit stops at your destination.
Tips: Fare should be negotiated before proceeding. Helmet required!
7. Car Hire
Due to the existence of many one-way roads and the fact that many traffic signs are in Thai only, driving oneself around Bangkok is as impractical as walking around for international visitors.
If you do want to hire self drive car, do it through recognized companies such as Avis, Budget and Hertz and ensure you have a CDW (Collision Damage Waiver). You also need an International Driving Permit.

With the monthly temperatures fluctuating between 19"C - 38"C, and the humidity between 66-83%, Bangkok climate is typically tropical: hot and humid throughout the year.
Bangkok does have different seasons though. The cool season runs from November through February and is the best time to visit Bangkok. March through May are the hottest months. The rainy season begins from July onwards. April is considered the hottest month and October the wettest.
Always wear thin fabrics. T-shirt, short sleeved blouse, modest short pants, knee length skirt, flip-flops, sneakers and sandals are OK most of the time. A sweater, thin jacket or pullover may be required if you're going out during cool season evenings. Bring an umbrella and waterproof shoes if you're visiting during the rainy season.
There's certain dress code being observed in certain places. For example, if you're visiting temples, palaces, or any other religious shrines or places of significant historical value, it is disrespectable to wear "too casual" clothes- sleeveless shirts, hot pants, miniskirts, shorts, tank tops, vest, etc.

Sa Wa Dee Kah, welcome to Bangkok, the heart and soul of a mysterious oriental kingdom by the Mae Nam Chao Phraya, The River of Kings.
Known as the Krung Thep (City of Angels), Thailand's angelically hedonistic capital holds the title "Venice of the Orient", a nod to the crisscrossing rivers and canals that weaving through the categorical hodgepodge of human and traffic.
A furious assault on the senses, Bangkok is all very three dimensional, You taste the indigenous spicy cuisine and imported Starbucks, hear the honking horns and hawking street vendors, smell the tangy curry and terrible traffic smog, see ramshackle stilt houses crouching in the shadow of the divine statues and temples, and skyscraping office blocks and luxury hotels, and feel the deep tissue Thai massages and irrepressible hospitality of Thais.
Yes, Bangkok may tranquilize or trouble, depending upon your frame of mind and circumstances. Yet be it contemplating at places of deity such as Wat Arun, The Grand Palace and Wat Pho, consuming at gleaming shopping centers such as MBK Center, Emporium and Siam Center, or clubbing at one of the legendarily steamy and seething night clubs, a real experience of Bangkok surly overloads your senses with mind-bogging surprises.
